This score is not a typo: The United State's Women's National Team defeated Thailand 13-0 in the United States' World Cup opener against Thailand.

Tuesday's score was the biggest blowout in the tournament's history, with Alex Morgan scoring five goals in a dominating win for the Americans. That it ended up a tournament record - for both the women's and men's side - surely did. By the end of the game, Alex Morgan had scored a record five - count them, five! - goals.

"Every goal matters in this tournament and so that's what we were working on this game."

The women's national team won the last World Cup in 2015, and they're looking to defend their title at this year's tournament, which will crown its victor on July 7.

The American Samoa, plagued by passport issues, only suited up one of 20 regulars for this qualifier in Australia.

It looked like the US was able to strike early following a ball into the box by Abby Dahlkemper.

Seven different U.S. players scored against Thailand, setting a record, according to Federation Internationale de Football Association.

The result surpassed Germany's 11-0 win over Argentina in 2007 and nearly doubled the USA own previous record - a 7-0 success over Taiwan in 1991.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi highest earning athlete on $192 million
Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and boxer Anthony Joshua (both at $US55 million) were the highest-earning British athletes. Thirty-five of their players featured (down from 40 last year), headed by LeBron James at $US89 million.

We probably won't see anything like United States of America versus Thailand again. If the Americans beat Chile, they'll secure a place in the round of 16.

"This is a world championship, so every team here has been fantastic to get to this point".

The pre-tournament favorites and defending champions took it right to Thailand in the opening minutes, with a Morgan goal ruled out for offside inside of 10 minutes. "We don't have any excuse and accept they are better", said Thailand coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian. "But we also feel like we've got more to do". "Yes they are athletes and they will be resilient".

It came close to the team's biggest rout ever. Imagine it being you out there. This is your dream of playing and then scoring in a World Cup. The U.S. beat the Dominican Republic 14-0 in a 2012 Olympic qualifier in Vancouver, British Columbia.

In the final group match before the knockout round, the Americans will travel to Le Havre to face nemesis Sweden, who they've been grouped with six times in World Cup play. The two national teams have only faced off once before, resulting in a 9-0 win for the 2016. Afterward, former USA goalkeeper Hole Solo called Sweden "cowards" for bunkering on defence.

"Honestly, you're going up against a side that is the first time in the World Cup, they're just happy to be there..."

Elsewhere, Sweden overcame hard conditions to beat a stubborn Chile side 2-0 in their opening game in Group F in Rennes.
