Ortiz began his career by playing six seasons for the Minnesota Twins (1997-2002), but his career took off after he joined the Red Sox.

Earlier in the day, Ortiz's media assistant updated his condition.

"It was the act of a hired killer", Leo Lopez, Ortiz's spokesman, told Diario Libre, a Dominican newspaper.

He arrived in Boston at about 10.30pm (10.30am Tuesday Singapore time), and the media showed images of an ambulance driving him to the hospital.

Two others also were wounded in the attack.

The operator of the motorcycle that was carrying the gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar, authorities said.

Garcia apparently tried to flee the nightclub after the shooting, but onlookers immediately stopped and attacked him before he was turned over to police and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Ortiz was shot at a club Sunday in Santo Domingo and underwent emergency surgery to fix damage done by the bullet to both his intestines and his liver.

"If we had known that there was a risky situation, he would not have been there at that time", Ortiz's rep said.

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona knows how much David Ortiz means to baseball.

Police said Ortiz was shot at almost point-blank range by a man identified as Eddy Feliz Garcia, 25. The television personality's injuries are not life-threatening, his wife, TV host Liza Blanco, said.

Police did not identify the third person or detail that person's injuries.

Ortiz galvanized the city in the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing that left three people dead, bellowing through a megaphone at Fenway Park: "This is our (expletive) city!"

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady extended his get-well wishes on Twitter, writing: "Papi defines Boston Strong. get well soon, my friend!"

The former designated hitter hit 541 home runs with 1,768 RBIs in 2,408 games in the majors.

The emotional leader of those championship Red Sox teams, Ortiz helped key the famed comeback over the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series - in which the Red Sox made history as the first team to overcome a 3-0 series deficit - and the subsequent World Series title, which snapped an 86-year championship drought for the franchise. Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, released a statement Tuesday morning providing an update on her husband while also thanking the Red Sox and the community for their support through this obviously hard time.
