Police say the man's girlfriend stopped by the pizza parlor he worked at and left her three young children, a 7-month-old, a one-year-old and a five-year-old, inside her running vehicle.

Police took both the father and mother into custody for questioning but, so far, neither has been charged.

It began on Thursday night, as NBC10 in Philadelphia reports (see video below.) It was around 9pm, and a mother with young children stopped her vehicle outside of a pizza place where her boyfriend, the father, was working.

According to The Philadelphia Enquirer, police sources identified the alleged carjacker as as Eric Hood from North Philadelphia.

He told WPVI: 'They [parents] were able to pull this auto thief out of the vehicle.

"The kids' father then pulled him out of the auto and beat Hood as other bystanders in the area joined the attack, according to investigators", NBC Philadelphia added.

The vehicle soon got stuck in traffic, and authorities say the couple pulled the 54-year-old man out of the vehicle.

'And the boyfriend caught up to him and there was some sort of physical struggle that ensued.

'The male was transported to Temple University Hospital by Medic Unit and was pronounced dead at 10.05pm'.

The other men who jumped in the fight were not located. Hood assaulted the father, then tried to flee-when a crowd of onlookers descended upon him. Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said: "I'm not a fan of street justice".
