Halep inspired by Federer prior to Serena thrashing

Williams will enter the U.S. Open searching for her first Grand Slam victory since the 2017 Australian Open.

Serena stayed in touch in the first four games of the second set before a bad backhand error in game five, sending the rival in front and propelling Halep 5-2 up after a backhand down the line victor from the Romanian in the seventh game. "I still work hard for every day, every match, every tournament".

She admitted that Williams was an intimidating opponent but added: "Today I made a decision to focus on the match and not on her".

Watching her daughter do that - and win - her mum Tania had no more words. "Just I hugged her and I kissed her. I felt them in the stomach", she said. "I wish she would just make a commitment for the next year and a half to two years and say, I'm going to absolutely focus on what's necessary for my tennis, so when I look in the mirror when I'm older, then I can go back in my mind and know I gave it everything I had". We are told to sit down and be quiet, which frankly is just not something I'm okay with.

"She said if I want to do something special in tennis I will have to play in the final of Wimbledon", she said. She is also now the first Romanian to win a singles title at the All England Club.

Federer: 'Stars are aligned' to win ninth Wimbledon title
To get to those numbers in Sunday's final, Federer must get past Novak Djokovic , who is the defending champion and seeded No. 1. Serbia's Novak Djokovic celebrates defeating Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut during a men's singles semifinal match at Wimbledon.

While Osaka was in tears over the furore when she received her maiden grand slam trophy, Williams doesn't regret the way she acted, saying it only strengthened her resolve to keep fighting for equality.

Not this time. Halep had lost nine of her 10 matches against Williams but on Friday she spent 30 minutes practising her returns, knowing that she had to face down the American's barrage to have any chance of getting into the match. You treat it a little bit easier, let's say. You can get intimidated by the moment.

With every minute the match went on Williams, who was short of fitness after playing seven tournaments all year, was being stretched out of her comfort zone and away from victory. Serena sprayed a forehand error in the first game of the match to give serve away, finding herself 2-0 down when Simona held at love in game two with a backhand error and allowing the Romanian to grab another break with a backhand down the line victor.

Forty-three years later, on another glorious summer's day, Halep could not stop smiling as she kept caressing the purple All England Club membership badge that had been pinned on to her grey hooded top. I knew she's very emotional.

"Someone told me I shouldn't look at the records anymore. I didn't think about the score at all". If she is quite happy the way she is, then fine. The dramas began not long after she arrived at Wimbledon.
