Pakistan train collision kills 11, injures 78

Up to four passenger cars have derailed as a result of the collision, the broadcaster added.

Senior police official Umar Salmat told local media the collision took place because the passenger train was diverted onto an incorrect track at the station.

"I'm reviewing the accident [and] I have told railway officials to speed up rescue and relief operations", he said, adding that a detailed statement would be issued later.

Seventeen people were killed and 83 injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train at the at Walhar near Sadiqabad, Punjab, Pakistan.

Injured are being shifted to the hospitals of Sadiqabad and Rahim Yar Khan where an emergency has been declared.

Rescue workers freed the wounded by cutting through the twisted metal of the carriages and dozens were taken to hospital, police said. A passenger train rammed into a freight train in southern Pakistan on Thursday, killing many people and injuring others, an official said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the victims and said he was saddened by the news.

Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed said an investigation has been launched.

Pakistan's aging railway network carries both passengers and goods across the country, but suffers periodic derailments and other accidents due to aging infrastructure.

He also demanded that the railways minister be held accountable for the tragedy.

Most recently, on June 20, three people were killed when Jinnah Express, travelling from Karachi to Lahore, crashed into a parked cargo train in Hyderabad.
