It would be to the frustration of the red side of north London should Saliba join Spurs after the Gunners looked to have all-but secured the deal. However, the Gunners will send Saliba back to St Etienne on loan during the first season.

The imposing stopper, who stands at 6ft 4in tall, went on to make 19 appearances across all competitions, impressing onlookers across Europe with his combination of stature and poise.

Saliba spend considerable times as a young player in AS Bondy and FC Montfermeil, before joining the ranks of St Etienne.

'I think he has everything needed to become a good player, much like Kurt Zouma, who I signed'.

Arsenal had delved deep in negotiations for the €30m rated defender but Saint-Étienne were unable to accept the payment structure suggested by Arsenal.

Unai Emery's Gunners, though, have always been said to be particularly keen.

In a potential hammer blow for Unai Emery and co., it was first reported by Mohamed Bouhafsi of RMC Sport that Tottenham had outbid their north London rivals for Saliba.

The Saint-Etienne defender has been heavily linked with a move to fierce rivals Arsenal in recent days, however, it would seem Spurs are prepared to try and steal him from under their noses.

Arsenal's correspondent for Goal, Charles Watts, added: "Reports from France that Spurs have come in and bid beyond what Saint-Etienne wanted for Saliba".

Saliba himself had already agreed a 5-year contract with The Gunners, in a deal that would have seen the Frenchman return to ASSE on loan for the 2019/20 campaign.
