New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton returned from the injured list and was in the lineup for Tuesday night's scheduled game against division rival Tampa Bay.

"I was so close".

Stanton is fired up about what the Yankees can do once he gets back to hitting like he can and Aaron Judge returns (probably later this week) to join newly acquired slugger Edwin Encarnacion plus the likes of Gary Sanchez, Luke Voit, Aaron Hicks, Gleyber Torres and Didi Gregorius in a power-for-the-ages lineup. "The boys have been fun to watch while I've been gone, so it's going to be good to file in and battle". He had appeared in only three games, batting.250 (2-for-8) with one run scored, and no homers and no RBI.

"It's been a long time".

"The bicep connects to your shoulder in two places, and when I was getting back swinging and getting moving around again, my shoulder started acting up", Stanton said. "First extended spring training, then I got hit in the knee and that set me back", Stanton said.

"I don't look at that no different than it was tonight", Rays manager Kevin Cash said of the importance of facing the Yankees. Barring a setback, he should be on pace to return this weekend when the Yankees play a four-game series against the Houston Astros, who are now tied with the Dodgers for the most wins in baseball. Stanton said Tuesday that the injury was a little more serious than a simple strain. "We're going to face another good pitcher, and we've just got to come out and establish a little bit more offensively earlier on".

Beth died on June 26 at the age of 51 after a battle with cancer . "She was our lion tamer in the Chapman family". Her son, Gary Chapman, said he is still processing his mother's death.

"It's just having the quickness, me getting the barrel there", Stanton said about his minor league production instilling confidence.

The 36-year-old first baseman was hitless during the Yankees' 3-0 win over the Rays in the opener of their three-game series at Yankee Stadium, going 0 for 4 as the designated hitter two days after being traded from the Mariners.

Encarnacion has a.237/.352/.522 slash line with 49 RBIs and entered play Monday leading the American League with 21 home runs.

NY shipped second baseman Starlin Castro and a pair of minor leaguers to Miami in exchange for the 6-foot-6 Stanton in December 2017, following an MVP season in which he hit a major league-leading 59 homers. So no matter how physically ready (you are), once you get out there and start playing games you don't know how it's going to bounce back.

Judge went 1-for-2 with a home run, a strikeout and two walks for the RailRiders on Tuesday.
