According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, James will undergo surgery for a stress fracture of his foot and will miss 3-to-4 months, costing him the bulk of the regular season.

James will be out a significant amount of time, but how much remains to be determined, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source.

Los Angeles Chargers standout safety Derwin James will be out indefinitely after sustaining a foot injury, the team announced Friday. He became the first rookie in Chargers history to be named first-team All-Pro.

The 23-year-old has shown an ability to dominate at multiple positions as one of the best flex athletes in the National Football League, and delivered 105 tackles, 13 pass deflections, 3.5 sacks and three interceptions last season. Head coach Anthony Lynn told reporters Friday that he does expect James to play again in 2019, but that he does not have a specific timeline for the young star's return. Versatile safety Adrian Phillips likely will get the lion's share of the reps at strong safety.

James excelled in his final season at Florida State in 2017, collecting 84 tackles (5.5 for loss), two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and 11 pass breakups.
