Starbucks traffic doubled after the launch of holiday cups, data shows

When Starbucks released its holiday cup previous year, the company saw footfall traffic to its locations almost double in just a few days, according to location intelligence and consumer insights company Cuebiq. And if you're in it for the 'gram, the cups have an added bonus of an augmented reality feature via Instagram Stories (see the Starbucks Instagram profile for more info).

Back in 1997, designer Sandy Nelson created the first holiday cup design, which featured swirls and hand-drawn holly leaves flecked with coffee beans.

Those merry and bright concoctions include a peppermint mocha, toasted white chocolate mocha, caramel brulee latte, chestnut praline latte, and eggnog latte.

Christmas is just around the corner, which means it's time once again to complain about the Starbucks holiday cup designs.

Starting on Thursday, holiday drinks make their return to Starbucks along with some festive food and bakery items, along with four new cup designs.

"We came up with this idea of wrapping the stores in holiday joy and wrapping the cups like a gift to our partners and customers", Quotson said in a news release.

Earlier this year, Starbucks began testing new "greener" cups. All four cups use traditional colors, red and green, although that was a point of contention in the past.

This dark green cup is also wrapped in the phrase "merry coffee", except this time, it's diagonal and the letters look quirky because they're slanted in different directions. The cups will be available November 7, along with a free limited-edition reusable red cup, which will be available to those who order a holiday beverage in the USA and Canada while supplies last.

The seasonal food and drink menu is also launching today with favorites such as the Gingerbread Latte and the Holiday Turkey Panini. In 2015, Starbucks launched a two-tone ombre cup, which sparked a response from Joshua Feuerstein, a Christian internet evangelist. The free reusable cups will be available tomorrow November 7th as soon as participating stores open until they run out of stock.

Holiday beverages and cups are returning to Starbucks Thursday.
