Plex today officially launched its new ad-supported streaming video service in more than 200 countries.

"While there are certainly other free streaming services out there, we're the first to offer a vast, free, diverse collection of content for a truly global audience", Plex said in a blog post.

The service will offer series and movies - including content from Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Warner Bros. Though this free content is aad-supported, an FAQ on the company's website says that "Plex ad-supported content will have fewer ads per hour than traditional broadcast, cable, or satellite programming". American Ultra, Frequency, Lord of War, Rain Man, Raging Bull, The Terminator, Thelma & Louise and Apocalypse Now all feature, with more movies set to be added in the future.

For those who already use Plex to manage their own digital content, the new ad-supported additions are a nice little bonus.

Those with a paid Plex Pass subscription will still see ads when streaming content from this new service.

Plex's free media can be played on nearly all platforms, including Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad, along with Roku, smart TVs, Android devices, and consoles. It's free, with no hardware or subscription required. Ripping your own personal library of physical disks to a hard drive is trivial, and directing Plex to a folder packed with content takes about two seconds. "What started more than a decade ago as a passion project to make accessing media on connected devices easier has evolved into the most comprehensive streaming platform in the industry, used by millions of people around the world". Well, it shows you ads, but at least you get to watch movies and shows legally without having to pay anything. Over time, Plex plans to continue to add additional free content.
