White Island volcano claims another victim as man dies in Melbourne hospital

The Alfred in Victoria confirmed the male patient had died at their hospital and that two women remained in hospital. The majority of the victims were Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Krystal had turned 21 shortly before the Browitt family went on a cruise on the liner Ovation of the Seas. Those who survived are still being treated in hospitals in New Zealand and Australia for severe burn injuries.

Two others are still missing since the incident and presumed dead.

Many people have questioned why tourists were still allowed on the island after New Zealand's GeoNet seismic monitoring agency raised the volcano's alert level on November 18 from 1 to 2 on a scale where 5 represents a major eruption, noting an increase in sulfur dioxide gas, which originates from magma. New Zealand scaled down the search operations and has acknowledged that the bodies of the two missing people may never be found.

More than a dozen Australians were killed after the White Island volcano erupted on December 9.

Most of the victims were Australian tourists. A hospital statement said the man had been critically ill.

Three members of a Sydney family killed in the White Island volcano tragedy in New Zealand have been farewelled at an emotional memorial service on Monday.

New Zealand authorities are investigating the circumstances around the disaster.
