"We said at the outset of the criminal investigation nearly two years ago that if the facts and the law determined the result, no charges would be brought", McCabe's lawyers said after Friday's decision, according to The Times.

The decision to spare McCabe criminal charges eliminates the prospect of a sensational trial that would have refocused public attention on the chaotic months of 2016, when the FBI was entangled in presidential politics through investigations touching both main contenders - Democrat Hillary Clinton and Trump, her Republican opponent.

After the release of the report, McCabe was sacked by the then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Does this implicate James Comey?

U.S. Attorney Timothy Shea, in a letter to McCabe's lawyers, wrote that the DOJ "has decided not to pursue criminal charges" over whether the former top law enforcement official misled investigators who were probing how the Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ handled matters associated with the 2016 election. Aides expected that the decision not to charge McCabe could produce a similar eruption of rage.

McCabe's legal team said the DOJ reached the only possible conclusion. "Certainly the president's kind of revenge tirade following his acquittal in the impeachment proceeding has only amplified my concerns about what would happen in my own case".

At least one of the women was forced into prostitution and Ray collected over $500,000 from her, prosecutors said. But they expressed concern that their actions had evaded the attention of the authorities for so long.

McCabe has been a target of Trump's attacks since even before he was elected, after news emerged in the fall of 2016 that McCabe's wife had accepted campaign contributions from a political action committee associated with ex-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe during an unsuccessful run for the state Senate there.

"Quite frankly", McCabe said, "we are seeing things happen every day in this country that many of us never ever thought we'd see here".

The Department of Justice announced Friday that it will drop the investigation into Former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

According to NBC News, the federal prosecutors working the Flynn case came under "pressure" from senior Justice Department officials to recommend a lighter sentence - which would trace some of the contours of the Roger Stone case. Stone had faced seven to nine years in prison until top officials at the DOJ intervened earlier this week.

Speaking with Fox News' Bret Baier, Ford cited Barr's public pushback on Trump's Tweets, as well as DOJ decisions related to Andrew McCabe and Michael Flynn cases as proof the attorney general was re-exerting the agency's independence from President Donald Trump. "I'm going to do what I think is right". "Attorney General William Barr pushed back at Trump in a television interview on Thursday, saying the president's tweets about ongoing criminal cases are making his job impossible".

Trump took to Twitter to clarify his position on Barr's remarks. "I think if there were those who were anxious about the fairness of this institution and this department under this president, it can be, you can have a little relief this week".
