Bezos said these workers can work on Amazon until they get their jobs back. The company has had several employees test positive for COVID-19.

While scientists say we haven't even reached the height of the coronavirus in the USA, it has already had disastrous effects on the economy as workers continue to be laid off. Economists are already comparing COVID-19 to the "The Great Recession" and predict up to five million Americans could lose their jobs this year, according to The Wall Street Journal. Last week, Amazon said it would raise pay for warehouse workers and delivery drivers by $2 per hour through the end of April.

Bezos noted in the letter that the company has placed purchase orders for millions of face masks that it wants to give to its employees and contractors who can not work from home, but very few of those orders have been filled.

"We are going to great lengths to keep the buildings extremely clean and help employees practice important precautions such as social distancing and other measures", Cheeseman said at the time. The company placed orders for "millions of face masks" to give to employees and contractors who can not work from home, Bezos wrote in a letter to employees Saturday.

Bezos, who shared a personal Instagram account, stated that businesses like restaurants and bars had to close due to the epidemic, hoping that people from their jobs would be able to work on Amazon until they returned to work.

Amazon has more than 175 warehouses around the globe, including more than 110 in North America.

Although the increase of overtime pay will be welcomed by Amazon employees, the Senators requested accommodations that go further, including paid sick leave for employees and hazard pay of time and a half even before overtime.

In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson called the accusations about worker safety "simply unfounded" and characterized its workers as "heroes", as opposed to people off of whose labor it is-as the senators noted-profiting during the pandemic. The new policy applies to logistics employees who work more than 20 hours per week, according to a document published by the group.

This comes the day after four U.S. Senators sent an open letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos calling on the company to do more to protect its workers during the coronavirus outbreak, following a confirmed case of the disease at a U.S. Amazon warehouse.
