The National AIDS Secretariat (NAS) organized the event, alongside its partners that include people living with the virus, United Nations agencies and other civil society groups campaigning for an AIDS-free world.The event held at the forecourt of the main ministerial building in Freetown - Youyi Building - was preceded by a march across the street of the capital city.

The plan announced during the State of the Union aims to cut new HIV infections by 75 percent in five years and 90 percent by 2020.

The risk of acquiring HIV is mainly among men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, sex workers and transgender people. Some 85 per cent of pregnant women living with HIV had access to antiretroviral medicines to prevent the transmission of HIV to their children.

The event was attended by some 700 participants from national and worldwide institutions including civil society organisations.

On the other hand, discrimination against AIDS-positive people had declined.
