Johnson would retire in 1991 but continue to have a massive impact on the wrestling world as he worked with fellow WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson to train his son inside the squared circle. Dwayne would go on to become one of the greatest wrestlers of his generation before crossing over into acting, and in fact, his first non-wrestling role on television was portraying his father in a 1999 episode of "That '70s Show". Johnson also held the NWA television championship on two separate occasions.

Many wrestling figures took to Twitter to pay tribute to Johnson.

"Always a gentleman, I always enjoyed talking with him. Our best to Dwayne, Ricky, Ata and the entire family".
