38 new COVID-19 cases in Brookings Co. Saturday, Oct

The state Department of Health data includes confirmed COVID-19 cases via traditional RT-PCR testing, plus probable cases based on rapid antigen testing, which detects the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

The Brookings School District COVID-19 dashboard reports that the district has 10 active cases, as of Friday: four from Brookings High School, one from Mickelson Middle School, one from Hillcrest Elementary, one Medary Elementary and three listed as "Other".

As a public service, Shaw Media will provide open access to information related to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) emergency.

Additionally, the department confirmed a further eight deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 653. In addition, the state has had 17,586 probable cases and 340 probable deaths.

Thirty-eight of the new cases are in Brookings County.

The good news about the current surge is that hospitalizations have not risen significantly in the past several weeks, but this can change very quickly as hospitalizations typically lag slightly behind positive cases.

These deaths account for almost 66% of the state's total. There had been 1,147,457 deaths attributable to the virus by Saturday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.7%.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 8,571,943 and 224,771, respectively, according to the CSSE. In all, 12,625 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 11,509 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.8%.
