The speculation of this modem being baked into the iPhone 12 series ran high.

Apple is making 5G downloads of iOS update available on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 mini. The company in its 5G support page explains that the 5G mobile data enables "higher data-usage features" for apps and system tasks including higher-quality FaceTime, high-definition content on Apple TV, Apple Music songs and videos, and iOS updates over cellular.

Of course, our web surfing test is just one way to measure battery life.

Apple and Qualcomm ended their lengthy battle and introduced a brand new deal below which the previous will get the 5G modems and associated elements for its iPhone fashions from the latter. There's no other information about them.

Here's an interesting experiment Google is making on its smart screens: entering voice commands without a hot word. Of course, this introduces a fair few privacy concerns.

"What's weird is that when the iPhone is limiting you to LTE speeds, it will still display the 5G icon in the status bar".

The support document from Apple also made mention of the iPhone 12's Dual SIM mode in that 5G can not be had on both cards except in China. Be warned, this setting uses more cellular data.

This setting also allows third-party apps to use more cellular data for enhanced experiences. Bohn did add however that Smart Data mode didn't feel like any kind of performance throttling.

The teardown video compares the iPhone 12 to the iPhone 11 and although there are some similarities in the overall layout of the phone's build, there are some key differences in the updated design. In the meantime, however, it's definitely something to keep an eye on, and we'd definitely recommend leaving your 5G setting to "Auto" and taking as much advantage of Apple's Smart Data Mode as possible.
