He said Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) whose economies constitute about 60 per cent of the global gross domestic product (GDP) assumes a central role in spearheading post-pandemic economic recovery.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) links 11 countries including Canada, Australia and Japan. Trump is now engaged in a quixotic attempt to overturn the result of the election, prompting reasonable doubts as to whether he would be willing or able to take part.

Buoyed by the signing of the world's largest trade pact over the weekend, Xi told a virtual meeting of some of the Asia Pacific's top CEOs that China was the "forerunner driving global growth" in a world hit by "multiple challenges" including the pandemic.

The White House declined to say whether President Donald Trump plans to address the summit.

Adding further doubt was Trump's failure to attend a series of high-level virtual summits with his Asian counterparts last week, including the East Asia Summit and a special meeting as part of the 37th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit. A' free and open Indo-Pacific' will be the cornerstone of the prosperity of the region.

The creation of the RCEP leaves the USA sitting outside Asia's two main free trade pacts.

Black individuals are 28% less likely to be diagnosed early than their white counterparts, the report noted. On average, the higher the prevalence of smoking, the more lung cancer cases in a state.

Japan aims to expand a major regional free trade pact called the CPTPP, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Friday, potentially catering for China's and Britain's interest in joining the deal.

Xi also called for stronger policy coordination among global communities and said globalisation is "irreversible" and that China will not engage in "de-coupling".

"In today's world where economic globalization has become an irreversible trend, no country can develop itself by keeping its doors closed", Xi said Thursday.

Mr Trump pulled the United States out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact, the predecessor to CPTPP.

The prime minister also hoped that New Zealand will lend its support in efforts to reach an agreement on the Kuala Lumpur Declaration at the end of the Apec Summit tonight. The only time he has joined an Apec summit - held annually - was in 2017. Xi and Vice President Mike Pence traded sharp barbs in back-to-back speeches at APEC meetings two years ago, a confrontation that prevented the forum from issuing a joint statement for the first time.
