China reports over 100 new daily cases as CNY holiday exodus looms

Mainland China posted 118 new cases on January 18, up from 109 a day earlier, the national health authority said in a statement.

Chinese officials are bracing for the Lunar New Year holiday season due to start next month with authorities appealing to citizens to avoid travel in order to contain the virus.

Hebei's provincial capital, Shijiazhuang, has been building a complex of prefabricated housing units to allow the quarantine of more than 3,000 people as it struggles to control more infections.

The new confirmed cases include 27 that were previously reported as asymptomatic cases.

Heilongjiang, another northeastern province, has reprimanded 16 officials for "not doing their duty" to prevent recent clusters of cases in the province, the provincial Communist Party newspaper Heilongjiang Daily reported today.

Another 23 cases were found in northeastern Heilongjiang province while two cases were reported in Beijing.

A team of experts from World Health Organization are quarantined in Wuhan ahead of beginning field visits aiming to shed light on the origins of the virus that is thought to have jumped to humans from animals, possibly bats. Of these, 217 were in the city's Gaocheng district.

Thousands of prefabricated rooms fill a vast field on the outskirts of China's Shijiazhuang city as construction crews work around the clock to erect a large quarantine facility to curb the city's growing Covid-19 outbreak.

China has largely contained the spread of the virus, with much of the country returning to normal.

It added that the current pattern of the outbreaks was not the same as the province of Hubei and its capital of Wuhan, and that China had accumulated a lot of experience since then that has made the authorities confident of containing its spread.

The Chinese mainland on Tuesday reported 103 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 88 locally transmitted cases and 15 arriving from outside the mainland, the National Health Commission said Wednesday.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in mainland China is 89,454, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,635.
