F1 Australian, Chinese Grands Prix postponed

There is a vacant slot on May 2, with the Portimao circuit in Portugal among the leading candidates for that weekend. The 2020 Australian Grand Prix was cancelled at the last minute as the gravity of the illness became clearer.

The date change means that there will only be a four-week gap separating the MotoGP Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix weekend at Phillip Island from October 22-24 and the Formula 1 race in the same state.

F1 bosses said they will "continue to work closely with our promoters and partners to monitor the ongoing Covid-19 situation" and expect spectators to return to the trackside at some point during the 2021 season.

"The global pandemic has not yet allowed lift to return to normal, but we showed in 2020 that we can race safely as the first worldwide sport to return and we have the experience and plans in place to deliver on our season".

The Australian race, usually the season-opener, was delayed from March to November, but no new date was set for the Chinese Grand Prix in a rejigged 2021 calendar.
