After making history as the first person of color elected to be Vice President of the United States of America and the first woman to hold the position, Kamala Harris has become a household name.

Harris will make use of two Bibles in the ceremony - one belonging to her longtime hero, former Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall, and the other belonging to Regina Shelton, a family friend who served as a second mother to Harris during her childhood.

With Harris' resignation, Newsom is expected to appoint fellow Democrat Alex Padilla, now California's secretary of state, to serve the final two years of Harris' term.

But Ms Harris' exit also means that no Black women will be serving in the chamber.

Vials of the COVID-19 vaccines are seen inside a cooler in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on January 17, 2021. The governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, wrote on Twitter, "Brazil is in a hurry to save lives".

In her November victory speech, she recognised the hard battle women faced to exercise their civic rights and break into the upper echelon of American politics.

In a recent interview for CBS News Sunday Morning, the couple shared some lesser-known facts about their relationship, including when Harris had to Google Emhoff before their first date in 2013. "Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities".

One of the few duties of the vice-president spelled out in the constitution is breaking ties in the Senate, but Kamala Harris hopes she doesn't have to do it much. Harris formally resigned her Senate seat Monday, ahead of her Wednesday inauguration with President-elect Joe Biden.

The Vice President-elect recalled the date fondly stating she had a good time on the date and looked forward to the text she received from Emhoff after the date.

Meanwhile, Harris tweeted on Monday that January 20, 2021 will "mark a new chance to heal, rebuild, and strengthen our democracy we all cherish".

"As senator-turned-Vice-President Walter Mondale once pointed out, the vice presidency is the only office in our government that 'belongs to both the executive branch and the legislative branch.' A responsibility made greater with an equal number of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate".
