Canada eyes policy on travel from India in response to massive outbreak

Some 300 flights a week were operating between the UAE and India before the ban was announced, according to local media, making the air corridor one of the busiest in the world.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says because there are so many people arriving in Canada from India and Pakistan with COVID-19, all commercial and private passenger flights from both countries will be prohibited as of midnight.

From 0400 on Friday many arrivals from India will be refused entry.

It turned down the requests from airlines because of concerns about queues at passport control.

Four carriers had requested to operate an additional eight flights from India as travellers seek to fly before the new rule comes into effect.

The House of Commons adopted a motion from the Bloc Québécois this afternoon calling for flights carrying non-essential travellers from certain countries, such as India and Brazil, to be barred.

The GCAA affirmed that nationals of the UAE and diplomatic missions between the two countries, official delegations, businessmen's planes and golden residence holders are excluded from this decision, provided that they should take preventive measures that include a mandatory 10-day quarantine and a PCR test at the airport as well as another test on the fourth and eighth days of entering the country.

On the West Coast, three recent flights from India were added to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control's list of flights with possible COVID-19 exposures.

India announced Thursday that almost 315,000 new cases of coronavirus had been recorded during the past 24 hours, in the highest daily toll in the world.

Responding to a question, he said, Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed the issue during a phone call on Monday.

Cargo flights between the two countries will continue, as usual, the statement added.

A briefing document drawn up by officials at Public Health England shows that between 25 March and 7 April, 3,345 arrivals from India were registered in United Kingdom border travel data.

The Trudeau government is considering new travel restrictions but has long resisted targetting specific countries.
