Ontario has confirmed its first case of a rare blood clot in a 60-year-old male patient after the individual received the AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD COVID-19 vaccine.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams says the patient is a man in his 60s who had received his first dose of the vaccine.

"I would expect the true number of cases per million doses of vaccine to become clear fairly soon as these reports stabilise, but it is already clear that it is going to remain a very rare event", University of Bristol paediatrics professor Adam Finn said.

Ontario will continue to offer the AstraZeneca vaccine to individuals 40 and older.

At Fort Meade, 800 doses of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine were improperly handled, according to Pentagon officials.

Williams adds that while the serious reaction remains extremely rare, his team has a robust process in place to monitor for any adverse events and have taken steps to make sure that these specific cases are identified and treated as quickly as possible.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization is also expected to announce new guidance for the vaccine at a news conference on Friday afternoon.

On Friday, the committee said the benefits of getting vaccinated with AstraZeneca far outweigh the risks of getting infected with COVID-19.

Ontario says it made the change in light of new information showing women who are pregnant are at high risk of severe illness.

For persons infected with the coronavirus, and present with mild symptoms, the Health Minister said that they would usually recover within about 10 days.

The orders from the top doctors in both regions were to come into effect Friday, a measure they both said was created to protect tens of thousands of essential workers from the virus.
