Premier Considering Implementing Paid Sick Days

"We moved fast to put in measures in place to reduce mobility". "If we get something wrong, we'll fix it".

"What Ontarians needed was a government that was prepared to take the expert advice and make sure that workers can get paid sick time off, not bring a police state to Ontario", Horwath told reporters later.

Ontario introduced the restrictions on Friday to curb the spread of the deadly virus as daily infections and hospitalizations have been on the rise. It also changed its instructions to law enforcement, after almost every police service in the province said it wouldn't randomly stop people and cars to enforce the stay-at-home order, which Friday's measures had allowed. "I know that some of those measures, especially around enforcement, they went too far". They recommended measures ensuring more people can work from home, increased workplace testing and vaccines targeting at the hardest-hit areas.

"I will always try to do what's right", Ford said, choking back tears. "Again, I'm sorry and I apologize to each and every one of you", he emotionally said during the conference.

Last week Ford implemented the most stringent measures to date, granting extraordinary powers to police to conduct random citizen stops.

He says the province is now working on a solution because the federal government hasn't expanded its own policy. "That is what we are going to be addressing". "And we will have the best program anywhere in North America, bar none".

The premier also confirmed that his government was working on a sick-leave program to support workers, although he did not provide a timeline or any further specifics. The concern is that too many marginalized workers can not afford to stay home from work unless there are better, and quicker, sick benefits.

Ford said his government was counting on Ottawa to enhance the program in its latest budget, which was released on Monday, but no changes were made to the CRSB.

"For some it's been dealing with isolation at home, the struggles with mental health and addiction", he said.

Members of the Ontario government sit in the legislature in spring 2020.

"Loblaw. generated money hand over fist and they made out very well through this pandemic, and I think that the workers should share in the profit and be rewarded and be compensated for the time effort and the risk".

Meanwhile Government House Leader Paul Calandra and Minister Elliot have said the provincial government will present a paid sick-leave program for essential workers in a matter of days, something that Ford had previously called double dipping.
