Biden spoke highly of Mondale, who is considered to have transformed the role of the vice presidency.

Former Vice President Walter "Fritz" Mondale's colleagues paid tribute Monday night to his life of public service and historic career.

Mondale also wrote an email to be sent upon his death to 320 former staffers, including many who worked for him decades ago.

In 2002, when Senator Paul Wellstone died in a plane crash just 11 days before the election, Democrats again turned to Mondale, but he narrowly lost to Republican Norm Coleman. "Joe in the White House certainly helps". He served as vice president under Carter between 1977 and 1981, until Ronald Reagan and his running mate, George H.W. Bush, defeated Carter and him in 1980.

The Perseverance rover - which carried Ingenuity to Mars - watched the liftoff from a nearby overlook, filming as well. Ingenuity re-did its full-speed spin test on Friday, and the blades performed as they should during flight.

"Jill and I had the opportunity to speak to Fritz and his family over the weekend, to reflect on the years of friendship we shared, and how much we learned from and leaned on each other". "Mondale was a giant not only because of the positions he held - Minnesota Attorney General, U.S. Senator, Vice President, Democratic Presidential candidate and Ambassador - but because of the work that he did".

Mondale was US ambassador to Japan from 1993 and 1996 under the then administration of Bill Clinton, after serving as vice president to Jimmy Carter for four years through January 1981.

In a statement released after Mondale's death on Monday, Carter called him "the best vice president in our country's history".
