Two people are in critical condition after a shooting on Tuesday near a USA military base in Frederick, Maryland.

Police first got the call around 8:20 a.m. for shots fired inside a Navy office at the Riverside Tech Park on Progress Drive.

Police said that there were two victims and that "one suspect is down".

When Woldesenbet arrived at a Fort Detrick checkpoint he initially stopped and Army officials attempted to confirm his identity.

A Navy hospital corpsman was killed at a Maryland base on Tuesday after shooting two people nearby, officials said.

The gunman, whom police have not identified, fled to nearby Fort Detrick military base.

The two people who were critically wounded by the shooter were airlifted to a hospital, Lando said.

Police have said that Woldesenbet was the only shooter involved in Tuesday's incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public. "It was ... a coordinated effort between our local police force here and Fort Detrick, all being executed within minutes, that absolutely led to further life-saving steps and potentially injury prevention". The suspect then made his way to Fort Detrick, where he was shot and killed by personnel at the base.

"When these incidents happen in other places, you're always grateful that it's not your community", O'Connor added.

By early afternoon, the Nallin Farm gate at Fort Detrick through which the shooter entered remained closed and two officers were standing by. The victims were taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma, where they were listed in "critical condition", Lando said.

"It's happening too frequently", he said.
