The Australian reported this morning that the bubble was expected to begin next Monday, April 12, or the following Monday, April 19, according to the newspaper's federal government and industry sources.

A Warriors NRL homecoming is still planned for June, with club boss Cameron George not keen to accelerate a return despite today's announcement of a travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand.

Quarantine-free travel for New Zealanders travelling to Australia had been in place since late previous year, but for the competition to proceed in its original six-week format or without the need for a single hub, it had to be the same scenario for Australians travelling to New Zealand.

'Those undertaking travel on either side of the ditch will do so under the guidance of flyer beware, ' she said.

"We are now able to take this next step and it is a world-first", Ms Ardern said.

New Zealand and Australia are among the top performers in the global battle against the virus - New Zealand has consistently topped Bloomberg's Covid resilience ranking and Australia now lies third.

Ms Ardern said there were no conversations about the possibility of a bubble with Singapore and Australia.

The New Zealand leader acknowledged those that had suffered due to the necessary border arrangements.

It's expected that Air New Zealand will also be reopening their global airport lounges across Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington. Random temperature checks will be carried out on arriving passengers.

Those arriving at airports in New Zealand from Australia will not have contact with people coming in from other parts of the world, who are going into isolation or quarantine facilities.

"As you can hear, quite a bit of preparation is being required by airlines and airports and I thank them for that work".

Ms Ardern and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison signed off on an in-principle goal to re-open borders last May, but outbreaks and planning challenges saw New Zealand delay re-opening.

Qantas, however, is set to ramp up routes between the two countries, in particular between Sydney and Auckland.
