School shooting in Russian Federation kills at least seven students

Rustam Minnikhanov, the president of Tatarstan, also arrived at the school, according to the Kommersant business daily.

Local officials said some children were evacuated from the school but others still remained in the building.

A second gunman suspected of carrying out a school shooting in the central Russian city of Kazan on Tuesday has been killed, news agencies reported, citing official sources.

Children were seen leaping from a third story window during a deadly school shooting in Kazan, Russia.

The regional Interior Ministry has denied that there were any accomplices after initial reports said that officers had killed a second shooter.

The regional prosecutor's office in the republic of Tatarstan said it has begun looking into the shooting and the regional prosecutor has been deployed to the scene.

News agencies reported that two unidentified people had carried out the shooting and one, a 17-year-old, had been detained.

Video footage shared on social media showed emergency service vehicles parked outside the school, with students jumping from the building to escape.

"I was in class, I first heard an explosion, then gunshots", TASS quoted a teacher as saying.

The emergency services source also told RIA Novosti that there had been an explosion at some point in the school.

Russian Federation has relatively few school shootings due to normally tight security in education facilities and the difficulty of buying firearms legally, although it is possible to register hunting rifles.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded, ordering the government to given them all the necessary assistance.

"The terrorist has been arrested, [he is] 19 years old".

The shooting led to calls for tighter gun control in Russian Federation.

The source added that preliminary information indicated one of the shooters was a teenager, who has been detained.
