As two-thirds of Torontonians have their first COVID-19 shots, and with the province at large not far behind, calls are growing louder for Ontario to start pushing up the timeline for second doses, especially for the most vulnerable.

Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe says the man, in his 40s, died after receiving a first dose of the vaccine in late April.

The 63-year-old is the only officially confirmed case of vaccine-induced clotting in Greece, according to the National Organization for Medicines (EOF).

But it has resumed the administration of AstraZeneca for second doses only as it rushes to use up 45,000 doses that are set to expire next week.

Much to the frustration of eager applicants, the Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV) announced that the appointment booking for the second round of the AstraZeneca Voluntary Vaccine Initiative was now closed in a tweet posted at 1.27pm.

"The risks associated with this vaccine are rare, but they are real", she said, noting that those who received an AstraZeneca shot still made the right choice. He adds it would be ideal if Ontarians waited 12 weeks between AstraZeneca shots, as research has shown waiting three months between shots boosts the body's immune response.

A sixth person is in a "critical state with trouble breathing and has been taken to hospital", Kawaya said. The border was closed, so they went back to Goma and headed to an area north of the city.

"It's incredibly frustrating from my perspective that I was told there is a rule and then exceptions were applied, and it wasn't given to the group that is the most vulnerable", said Sue.

In March, South Sudan received 132,000 doses from Covax but the country's national taskforce on Covid-19 chose to return before they expire after discussing the matter with the World Health Organization (WHO). "I want to take this opportunity to reiterate that those who received AstraZeneca vaccine should feel very confident in their decision".

Another 10,000 doses of AstraZeneca expire next month and the province has more than 300,000 doses in stock.

"There is a small connection of thrombosis in women under 40 with the AstraZeneca vaccine", Panagiotopoulou said, but health experts in Cyprus stopped short of pointing to a medical mechanism or health factor that could cause the rare blood clot.

Williams said last week that those who got their first dose of AstraZeneca between March 10 and March 19 during a pilot project at some pharmacies and doctors' offices will be prioritized for the second dose.

The spokesperson said that "many" pharmacists will reach out proactively to patients to schedule an appointment, however it is not entirely clear what will happen in the case of individuals who received a shot from a pharmacy not offering second doses.
