Nearly 1,000 confirmed Delta variant cases across Sussex

That compares to 11,007 new cases yesterday and 19 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test.

Speaking at the media briefing on COVID-19, Swaminathan said "We need more data, again from well designed studies on the efficacy of the different vaccines that are in use in different countries against the different variants".

"So we're pressing ahead to try to make sure we have those remaining staff members offered the vaccine, taking up the vaccine, but if you can do it voluntarily then I think that is a much stronger basis from which to go on persuading people to do the right thing".

In separate population surveillance data on possible COVID-19 reinfections offering some hope of long-term immunity, the PHE found a "low risk" of reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. This is equivalent to around 0.4 per cent cases becoming reinfected.

According to the latest data, it has spread to 356 confirmed cases, with more than 300 in the Calgary health zone.

Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said it was "encouraging" that hospital admissions and deaths are not rising at the same rate as cases, but experts will "continue to monitor it closely".

The Delta VOC is seen as the main factor behind a feared third wave of the pandemic in the United Kingdom, with the government delaying lifting all lockdown restrictions by a month until July 19 to prevent hospitals being overwhelmed.
